From staff reports
SPARTANBURG COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
Two Pacolet women, including an 80-year-old, have been charged in a store assault in Pacolet that sent the victim to the hospital.
Myrtle Ruth Smith, 63, of 171 Pinto Court, and Mary E. Wannamaker, 80, 297 Brown Mill Road, have been charged by the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office with second-degree assault and battery, according to online jail records.
The 33-year-old victim told deputies she was assaulted at the Li'l Cricket store on South Pine Street in Pacolet on Monday because she told the two women to move away from the cash register while she entered the PIN of her debit card, an incident report states.
After the victim asked the women to move, she said the women began making derogatory statements about her, and she also talked back to the women, the report states.
When the victim turned to leave the store, one of the women spit on her, and the victim said she turned back around and slapped her. Both women then attacked the victim, with the assault moving out into the parking lot.
The victim told deputies that the women punched her and hit her with jugs of windshield wiper fluid and a purse, the report states.
The victim said she had recently had back surgery and was in intense pain, the report states. She was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Smith and Wannamaker were arrested Wednesday and remained at the Spartanburg County Detention Facility awaiting bond hearings.
