MEMPHIS - Blacks accused of killing white male nurse

Memphis, TN -- David Santucci loved to help others, he loved it so much he devoted his profession to it, but early Monday morning he was killed during a robbery attempt on a busy downtown Memphis street.

"I cry, and I come out of it, and I cry, and I cry some more, and I don't understand," said Darlin Fugit, Santucci's mom.

Memphis Police say Santucci was shot at 275 South Main just after 1:30 a.m. Monday.

"It was like a loud pow!" said Steve Ferguson, who heard the gunshot.

"He had to have been on his phone with his keys in his hand, because his phone was lying on the side of him," said Ferguson, who along with others rushed to the scene after the suspects sped off.

"Another girl walked up, she was applying pressure to his gunshot wound," he said. "We prayed that he would be alright.

According to Police, Santucci died at The Med.

"If they wanted something from him he would have just given it, he would have given the shirt off his back," Fugit said.

On Monday evening, Memphis Police charged three suspects.

Mario Patterson, 23, and Dondre Johnson, 19, were both charged with First Degree Murder, and Jerrica Norfleet, 23, was charged with being an accessory to the crime.

"I don't know why someone would do this, and to think of all the other mom's who have gone through this, and their same questions of why," Fugit said.

Fugit said her son graduated from Houston High School and the University of Memphis and had recently started working as a nurse at Methodist University Hospital.

"His values and what he stood for was him, everything about him, he walked it, he act it, he talked it, exactly who he was," she said.
